HOUSE CONCURRENT RESOLUTION NO. 27
(By Delegates Ryan, Kiss, McGraw, Pulliam and Thompson)
Directing the Division of Highways to name the bridge across the
New River just outside Hinton on State Route 20, the "Sylvia
Mathews Bridge."
Whereas, Sylvia Mathews was born in Hinton, Summers County;
and
Whereas, She attended Hinton High School where she was a
member of the girls varsity basketball team, student body
president and Valedictorian of the Class of 1983; and
Whereas, Ms. Mathews was the first woman president of the
Hasty Pudding Club at Harvard where she graduated with honors;
and
Whereas, In 1987, she was chosen as a Rhodes Scholar and
graduated from Worcester College at Oxford University where she
also lettered in basketball; and
Whereas, Ms. Mathews worked two years at McKinsey and Company
Consulting Firm, worked on the National Economics Council at the
White House and became the first female Chief of Staff at the
United States Treasury Department at 29 years of age; therefore,
be it
Resolved by the Legislature of West Virginia:
That the Division of Highways is hereby directed to name the
bridge across the New River just outside of Hinton on State Route20, the "Sylvia Mathews Bridge"; and, be it
Further Resolved, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates
forward a copy of this resolution to the Commissioner of the
Division of Highways.
